The Effect of Parentification on Depression and Anxiety in Adolescents

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of parentification on depression and anxiety in adolescent boys and girls. The subjects of the study were 503 students from middle schools and high schools in Gwangju and jeollanam-do. The parentification was measured with FRS-A, Child depression Inventory (CDI). Anxiety of adolescents was measured using Korean-version of Measurement of Social Evaluation Anxiety. Frequency, percentage, Cronbach ¥á, correlations, and multiple regression analyses were conducted.The results of this study were as follows.First, parentification had positively significant influence on depression and anxiety. Second, High level of unfairness, a sub-variable of parentification, indicated high level of depression. Third, Anxiety significantly influenced on emotional caregiving and unfairness, sub-variables of parentification.
